There is a very real possibility that your PS4 will one day remain completely incapable of playing games without helping to break it out of jail, although for now it remains remote.
An alarming issue arose this week when a systemic hacker and Bloodborne 60FPS modder Lance McDonald explained what the failure of the CMOS battery on the PS4 on his Twitter account means.
The battery powers the most important parts of your PS4, helping it store information like a basic system clock that users can’t change, and like any battery, it will eventually fail. If you’ve ever tried to save your game to an old Nintendo cartridge and found that the file disappears the next time you turn it on, you’ve already experienced something similar.
This is a mistake because trophies on the PS4 need an internal system clock (the one you can’t see / change) to be accurate, so people can’t change the date / time of the PS4 to make it look like they got the trophies earlier than they actually had. While your PS4 will still boot with a dead CMOS battery, the strangeness of the way the console checks trophy data means it will only allow you to play games if the system clock can be updated – the same goes for both downloads. i disk-based games. The only way the system clock can be updated is by connecting to a PSN. All of this means that potentially decades after the PS4 battery failed and Sony pulled the PSN offline, your PS4 will simply refuse to play any game.
This problem can still be solved by Sony, changing the way the PS4 handles trophy validation in the firmware update, and if you don’t, you can close the console to avoid the problem. In other words, this doesn’t have to be an extended death sentence for your console – but if McDonald’s is accurate and nothing changes, it will be. I asked Sony Interactive Entertainment if it could confirm or deny McDonald’s information and will update this story with any response.
It’s at least some assurance that you’ll be able to play best ps4 games way PS5 backward compatibility – assuming nothing goes wrong there.
