Four months ago, a player probably started bothering you in your life to buy him one of the latest gaming consoles, the Sony PlayStation 5 or the Microsoft Xbox Series X. Like the rest of the country, you may have struggled to get one for Christmas, but there is another option .
We think the Nintendo Switch could be a better alternative to the PS5 or Xbox – it’s smaller, more affordable, more portable and more importantly, it’s easier to find online.
Players are rescuing digital princesses like Mario and building their dream island on Animal Crossing since its release in 2017, but this mobile gaming device allows you to play together as a family.
What is the Nintendo Switch?
The Nintendo Switch converts between a home console and a handheld system. Players can enjoy games like Spyro Dragon or Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild both at home on TV and on trips (allow Covid restrictions).
The track is in the name, the switch allows you to “switch” between three modes at any time:
Manual – Hold it like a tablet, with controllers inserted in the device on both sides for greater comfort
Table top – turn the foot on the bottom of the switch and disconnect the play controllers on the table or table in the plane or train.
TV – Plug it into the docking station, disconnect the controllers and connect it to the TV for big screen playback.
Detachable controllers come with straps to prevent your kids (or you) from throwing them across the room for more active games like Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure or Fitness Boxing, similar to how the old Nintendo Wii worked. And if your kids are playing games like Super Mario Maker 2, where they sit still and don’t move, you can join controllers for added convenience.
You’ll also get a TV docking station, HDMI cable and a charging plug – setting up the console is easy and takes a few minutes. It’s small enough to fit in a purse or backpack (approximately 4 x 9 inches), and a fully charged battery will last for six hours.
You can download games directly from the digital store (you have enough storage space for up to 12 at a time) or a cartridge slot to build a library of fun things to play. You can also add a Micro SD card to increase storage even more.
If your family probably won’t play together, you can get the Switch Lite console. This cheaper model does not have a port to connect to a TV dock, and the controllers cannot be disconnected, but it has a longer battery life (up to seven hours).
What games can you play on the Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo is developing all the classics, from Super Maria and Donkey Kong, to Zelda and Pokémon, with new games being released regularly.
Nintendo follows the same entertainment software rating system (ESRB) as other consoles, so games will be categorized from Parental Leadership (PG) to 18+. There are only a few mature titles like Doom Eternal and Skyrim, but the Switch is for kids, so the vast majority are for teens and younger.
There are several different genres, from runners and puzzlers, to shooters and adventurers. On many titles, such as Minecraft, Fortnite and FIFA, you will have the option of single and multiplayer mode.
Dedicated single-player titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Pokémon Sword are longer and lead them with stories. This will keep the kids entertained for hours – when of course they don’t do their homework.
And multiplayer options like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros allow you to play it all together, either at home on the same TV or online with friends.
You can connect the Switch to a game or two from several retailers at a discounted price, so you have something to play right away.
Is the Nintendo Switch worth it?
We think the Switch is the best available game console.
Switch offers a library of impressive games to compete with other consoles on the market at a much lower price. The smaller Switch Lite model opens up a gaming experience on the go at an even cheaper price, under £ 200, and can offer children hours of play.
It is also more versatile. Whether you’re playing games with your family on a big TV, privately during a lunch break or on the bus, it’s a dedicated gaming console with the same portability as your smartphone.
