Fighting cervical cancer Vicky Phelan suffered a setback in treatment in the U.S. after she fell ill on Valentine’s Day.
The 46-year-old mother of two was forced to spend the day in hospital due to the side effects of her new medications.
The cervicalCheck Vicky campaign is currently based in Maryland as she participates in a clinical trial of a new drug in an attempt to prolong her life. She was taking a medication called M7824, which she described as “Pembro 2.0” – an updated version of the medication she had previously taken.
But unfortunately for Vicky, the side effects made her extremely sick.
She explained on Instagram that she had failed to keep her anti-disease medication, so doctors put her on an IV injection in an attempt to rehydrate her.
The 46-year-old said: “And side effects are starting to appear.
“I landed in the hospital today, on Valentine’s Day, after several very difficult days of continuous vomiting. I couldn’t cut down on the disease pills they prescribed me.
“Fairly speaking, as soon as I called my doctor this morning, he immediately said that he would place me in the Day Department, where I am being treated, rehydrate on an injection and take some anti-IV disease medication. “
Vicky added that her friend had arrived from New York to help her, and the terrible side effects were slowly beginning to subside.
She said: “I came home and managed to keep a slice of tea and toast. Thanks to my visitor Jennifer Scanlon who drove from NY to see me today.
“She did not get what she was guessing for today. None of this was supposed to happen, but … thank God Jennifer was here to look after me. I will do small graces where I can. ”
