The defense headquarters says the vortex strike troops prevented an attack on passengers traveling from Bayalsa to Jos on the Markudi-Lafiya road on Thursday.
The coordinator, the defense media, Major General John Enenche, said in a statement on Friday that the operation was supposed to ensure a peaceful yuletide season.
Enenche said criminals set up an illegal checkpoint on the road where they stopped a commercial vehicle to rob passengers.
He said the troops immediately intervened with superior firepower and forced the criminals to flee in disarray.
He said troops then provided armed escorts to passengers traveling from the scene to Lafia to allow them to continue their journey.
Enenche also said troops deployed in Zaki Biam and Ukum had eliminated two suspected bandits who attacked the village of Dyom in the Borokiyo Council department in the Ukum local government area of Benue.
He said troops followed the bandits in pursuit following a community call regarding their activities, killing two while others fled with gunshot wounds.
He said that during the meeting, the troops found some weapons and ammunition and a motorcycle.
“The military supreme command praises the troops for their efforts and further encourages them to remain committed to the course.
“Troops continue to maintain routine and confidence-building patrols in the zone,” he said.
The coordinator also said the two suspected bandits had voluntarily surrendered to Hadarin Daji’s troops on Thursday in Magami at Zamfari.
He said the suspects who surrendered further took the troops to a bush where they buried some weapons and handed over the weapons.
He announced that the troops found two AK-47 rifles, 45 bullets of special ammunition of 7.62 mm caliber, one cutlass and one knife.
He said troops eliminated a suspected bandit on December 23 in an operation to clear a bandit hideout in and around Pauwa / Zango rocks.
According to him, their hideouts have been cleared and demolished.
During the operation, two bandits were arrested and handed over to the appropriate prosecution agency for further action (NAN).
