Thomas Tuchel was ‘very happy’ for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over FC Porto in the first game of their quarter-final draw in the Champions League.
Mason Mount’s sublime goal in the first half rounded out Ben Chilwell late in Sevilla to bring the Blues closer to the semi-finals.
It was a shaky start on Tuchel’s side, but Mount’s goal in the 32nd minute brought the game back in Chelsea’s favor, although it was still below the level in stages.
It has been a pleasant night in terms of results for Tuchel, who will now try to finish the job next Tuesday when they return to Seville.
He told BT Sport after the match: “It was a difficult match against a strong Porto team.
“There were many moments in which we suffered. We accepted that. Circumstances are a little different in the quarterfinals. The spirit was good and it was a great result.
“I was pretty sure of it [they’d react well after the WBA defeat]. I saw the answer right away in the locker room and the next day. That wasn’t a big concern. We were ready to respond. There will always be failure in sports. The biggest challenge is to get back.
“Together we had a lot of great results, then together we had a loss, and then a reaction after a loss together. It brings us closer and increases trust.
“I am just happy to be here [Mason Mount] results. A very important goal that opened the match. It calmed my nerves. Not an easy shot, but very precise. Very happy for Mason. He took responsibility.
“[Ben Chilwell’s goal was] excellent. He restrained himself and bypassed the guard. It was super important to get the second goal away. Chilly forced a mistake and kept calm in the box. We are very happy to be leaving with this result, but it is only half time. “
