Last year, Sony introduced its new generation of gaming consoles – the Sony PlayStation 5, starting with the United States and Japan in November, and later the same month available in multiple regions.
Now the Sony PS5 has officially become the fastest-selling console in U.S. history. According to NPD Group analysis, the latest console is at the top of the list in terms of units sold and sales in dollars since its release five months ago.
NPD CEO Mat Piscatella said the Nintendo Switch became the best-selling hardware platform in the first quarter of this year, while Sony’s PlayStation 5 ranked first in the United States in terms of sales value.
Data shows that total sales of gaming hardware in March this year were 47 percent higher compared to the same period last year, a record of $ 680 million. The total amount spent this year is $ 1.4 billion, up 81 percent from the same period last year.
As for the latest PlayStation, Sony believes that as of March 31, 2022, the company can sell more than 12.8 million PS5 units, which exceeds PS4 sales in its second year of release.
Sony also took the lead in terms of accessory sales, with the PS5 DualSense controller being the leading addition in dollar sales in March and the first quarter of 2021.
In related news, the Japan-based company announced earlier this week a new update for the PS5 that allows for expanded storage for the console and one-touch playback, which includes a TV when the console is turned on. It also gives players the ability to see the percentage of controller charge during charging and 120Hz support for “some” 1080p / 120 Hz PC monitors, allowing 120fps of gaming.
