After less than two weeks on the market, AirPods Max got its first third-party accessory on Friday with the announcement of the WaterField Designs product designed to replace Apple’s much malicious Smart Case.
The AirPods Max Shield case from WaterField Designs is a leather folding shell that includes a whole set of headphones, not just ear cups. It has a leather exterior, a foam core and a plush interior to hold your headphones.
There is an external waterproof zipper to carry the supplied accessories, such as a charging cable. Inside, the stretchy mesh pocket with leather pull-out tab makes full use of the negative space under the AirPod Max headband and is perfect for storing bricks.
Interestingly, the case works with or without Apple’s Smart Case. If you opt for the Apple case, you can insert AirPods Max yourself. The set of magnetic “butterfly wings” fits exactly between the two ear cups, preventing them from hitting during the trip. Like Apple’s smart case, the wings switch the headphones to extremely low power to save battery power.
If you prefer to take an Apple case with you, the magnetic butterfly wings fold straight when driving, so that the AirPods Max with a smart case can fit you exactly.
You can charge the headphones in the case by plugging in the cable and tearing down the double zippers – one on each side – to the huge cable in the center.
The back of the case is an extra-large pocket with a stretchy mesh for any extra accessories you have left to carry.
WaterField Designs ’new AirPods Max Shield case is available to order for $ 99. The first production was launched on December 31. They come in canvas wax and brown chocolate leather or ballistic nylon and black, blue or crimson leather.
