The removal of former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu from office was announced shortly after he returned to his desk at the headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, a source from the presidency said on Wednesday.
A source said his removal would be announced in the morning, but the former IG’s trip to Owerra to assess the damage caused by the Easter Monday attack on Imo state police headquarters delayed the announcement.
He denied that Adam was removed while he was still on assignment in Owerri.
The source said: “A press conference scheduled for the environment where Police Minister Mohammed Dingyadi will be held has been postponed for around 2pm when it was revealed that the former IG had gone to Owerra on an official assignment. When we called him to make sure where he was, he told us he was in the state of Imo. And when he said he was on his way to the airport on his way to Abuja, we decided to put the conference on hold.
“We knew that the flight would not last more than 45 minutes. So we waited and when it was confirmed that he was in his FHQ office, we now turned to the press conference. ”
“The former IG knew about the press conference, so there was nothing like he was fired while on official duty.”
