The Nigerian army has confirmed the killing of one officer and 10 soldiers who are in a stabilization operation in the state of Benue, and no criminals have been identified yet.
Director, Army Public Relations, General no. Mohammed Yerima, revealed this in a statement Thursday in Abuja.
Yerima said the troops were initially declared missing, leading to the deployment of a joint search and rescue team consisting of military troops and Vortex Operation personnel.
He said the search and rescue team unfortunately found all the missing troops dead in the area of the Konshish local government in the state.
According to him, while the bodies of the killed troops were immediately evacuated, efforts are underway to find the perpetrators of this heinous crime with the goal of bringing them to justice.
Yerima said the Nigerian army is under the command of a lieutenant general. Ibrahim Attahiru, will continue to be determined to ensure stability in Benue and other parts of the country affected by the activities of criminal gangs.
He gave the assurance that the military authorities are determined to ensure that an unprovoked attack does not disturb the general peace enjoyed by the locals.
According to him, the COAS has therefore instructed field commanders to ensure sustained efforts to remove and resolutely address these bad elements that threaten peace in the area.
“It may be recalled that Benue, who was a breeding ground for violent conflict, enjoyed relative peace after the success achieved by various security agencies that worked tirelessly to protect law-abiding citizens and ensure that they run their legitimate business without fear of harassment by criminals.
“The Nigerian military is appealing to the public to voluntarily present useful information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of this base act,” he said.
