The potential absences, condition and general health of the best defenders of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have been called into question as El Clásico approaches.
For Barcelona, Gerard Piqué is in the race for fitness ahead of the consequent La Liga clash. The defender came out last month with a knee injury, but is struggling to be available in the big game.
However, it goes without saying that if Piqué were included in the lineup of the match day, it would be a last minute decision. And he would have to play through the barrier.
On the other hand, Ronald Araújo’s play was disheartening. He even got a last-minute assist from the bench in Barcelona’s win over Real Valladolid.
If Piqué and Araújo were fully in shape, maybe they would both start. Ronald Koeman uses three central attacks in his system, so he could receive both. However, we don’t know if both, one or neither of them will get a nod.
Meanwhile, for Madrid, Raphaël Varane will not be on the field due to positive tests at COVID-19, and Sergio Ramos will be absent after suffering an injury with the Spanish national team in the European World Cup qualifiers.
It remains to be seen how Madrid will deploy, but they took advantage of Eder Militão in the win over Liverpool in the middle of the week along with Nacho at the back.
Various absences in the defense could hint at an affair with high points, but again, maybe not. Both teams have coped well with the absences of their best defenders – at least so far.
