Tag Heuer Carrera Given a limited edition for HODINKEE

We came back with TAG Heuer
Our new collaboration with the Swiss brand revives the classics of all time: the revolutionary single-choice chronograph by Jack Heuer from the 1960s with a date, the second generation Carrera Dato ref. 3147N. Limited edition of 250 watches, limited edition TAG Heuer Carrera Dato for HODINKEE contains a reworked version of the top-of-the-line Heli 02 brand automatic automatic caliber housed in a 39 mm inspired glass box housing. Here’s why we love him.

Jack Heuer was a horological hitmer; a bootstrapper who ran his family business to profitability after taking power in 1962, at a meager age of 30. The designs produced by Heuer during his first decade of the leading brand are today considered to be some of the greatest triumphs in the history of chronographs. And if there’s one collection that best illustrates Heuer’s approach to making watches, it’s the Carrera chronograph.

First published in 1963, Carrera served as a building block for the new generation of Heuer watches. His rapid success provided the company with a financial basis for further experiments in design and engineering, and in 1965 Heuer followed the inaugural Carrera with a date function. That watch was a ref. 3147; not only was it the first Carrera with a calendar complication, but it was also one of the first wristwatches with a chronograph that now had a standard standard rotating wheel display.

Nicknamed “Dato 45” due to the combination of the past 45-minute register in three hours and the display of dates, this new-age chronograph was characterized by the same clean and compact profile of the conventional Carrera housing with the basic basics to choose from. You may remember that this is not the first time we’ve pulled out the original Dato 45 for a collaborative limited edition with TAG Heuer: 2017. Carrera Skipper Limited Edition for HODINKEE it had an almost identical orientation of one sub-register. Working again with our colleagues from TAG Heuer, we wanted to bring back a watch that helped inspire one of our favorite projects ever, in the most authentic way possible.

Fifty-six years later, we think Dato’s debauched 60s aesthetics are still as charming as ever. Always and forever an exercise in design comprehensibility, the new Carrera Dato features several minor improvements that amplify that effect; we not only wanted to reproduce the original clock with TAG Heuer, but also to move it forward.

Vintage chronographs from the 1960s have long been of interest to watch lovers, and some of the most desirable are the black-picked examples from Heuer. A black portal to the collector ‘s world, these models usually differ in N – for black – at the end of the reference numbers and share a bold, saturated aesthetic that stands out against the more conservative look of the chronograph with silver and white dials.

You won’t find absolutely any fauxtin on the new Carrere Dato dial. Its glossy black tone now deliberately extends to the ring of the chapter, enveloping the entire dial in consistent, convincing darkness.

Yes – Carrera Dato is a rare vintage watch where collectors with outstretched hands welcome the one-day blink of the joint windows. We would even go so far as to claim that the 3147N’s second-generation design presented here represents not plus ultra complicated minimalism in the making of watches. When people say that vintage watches only look better than their modern counterparts, this is a perfect example of why.

Think of it this way: if a conventional chronograph is trying to guide you on the novelty of measuring time, Carrera Dato should help you in your daily life in the most practical ways possible. Are you more likely to take less than 30 minutes – like baking a steak – or will you follow the entire 12-hour experience?

The catalyst for the new generation of watchmaking at TAG Heuer, the Caliber Heuer 02 is the brand’s latest and greatest achievement. It was developed in 2010 from the ground up by TAG Heuer, which aimed to combine all the technical specifications that could be desired in a 21st century chronograph in one leading movement.

To create a unique dial layout of the original Dato, TAG Heuer removed the typical six and nine-hour subnumber for the Caliber Heuer 02 and developed a completely new date disc with a fresh font. It otherwise starts with a fully integrated design that works in 33 gems, with a heart rate of 28,800 vph, with an impressive power reserve of up to 80 hours, all stored in a single tube. The Caliber Heuer 02 uses a wheel-to-wheel and vertical clutch mechanism, a premium combination found in many of today’s high-end chronographs. Visible through the sapphire crystal display case housing, the Caliber Heuer 02 finish is simple but attractive, with a sharp Côtes de Geneva over the main board and a blackened and open rotor marking the brand’s recent 160th anniversary.

Our latest collaboration with TAG Heuer officially brings to life our favorite chronograph from the 1960s, highlighting the company’s rich history and a range of modern capabilities in the process. A limited edition of 250 issues priced at $ 7,250 per piece, the TAG Heuer Carrera Dato Limited Edition comes paired with a black alligator leather shoulder strap featuring a buckle with the Heuer signature. Half of the 250-piece series is available today with free worldwide delivery from the HODINKEE store, and the rest will be available at TAG Heuer boutiques in the United States and Japan.
