The Abia state government has uncovered suspicious explosive materials found at Union Primary School, Afaraukwu, in the northern Umuahia local government area.
That was revealed in a statement issued Thursday by Information Commissioner John Okiyi Kalu.
Following the discovery, the commissioner said the state government “is currently working with relevant security agencies in the state to discover the source and nature of the explosives.”
“Although initial testing of the device shows evidence of corrosion leading to suspicions that the materials are relics from the Civil War era, we are awaiting a definitive official report from the EOD detachment of the Nigerian police currently investigating the incident,” the statement said. read.
“In the meantime, the necessary measures have been taken to protect students and school staff with ongoing security checks while the school is temporarily closed.”
For his part, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu instructed security agencies to launch proactive checks at other vulnerable locations out of plenty of caution.
Noting that no life or property was lost, the state government has asked citizens and residents to continue to be vigilant and report suspicious situations to security agents.
