Celebrate the human flight into space on St. George’s Night this Saturday (April 10) with Planetary Society CEO Bill (scientist), former NASA astronaut and NFL player Leland Melvin, Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson, OK Go , Inspiration4 astronaut Sian Proctor among other special space guests.
Monday, April 12, marks two major space anniversaries: 60 years since Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space (April 12, 1961) and 40 years since the first flight of the space shuttle (April 12, 1981).
St. George’s Night, an annual event co-created by space flight author and advocate Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides and Virgin Galactic space chief executive George Whitesides celebrating human space flights, will also celebrate its 20th anniversary with this year’s Global Livestream event.

This year, St. George’s Night is virtual with a global event on the theme of “Earth Seed,” a reference to the book “The Parable of the Sower” by science fiction author Octavia E. Butler. NASA recently named the landing site of the Perseverance rover “Octavia E. Butler Landing” after the author.
“The book shares a strong vision of a spiritual journey that can bring communities together during difficult times and inspire them with a vision of reviving the stars,” the Yuri Night team said in a statement sent to Space.com. “That vision seemed appropriate this year,” Loretta Whitesides said in a statement.
Yuri’s Night will feature a number of exciting events and performances throughout the evening. From the activities you can expect, OK Go debut will present a brand new joint music video project made with the help of fans from home during the pandemic.
This year you can even show up all day earlier to celebrate St. George’s Night because on Friday, April 9, Twitch will host a special event featuring Everyday Astronaut, space flight author and historian Amy Shira Teitel and YouTube person and astrophysicist Scott Manly.
How to attend a party
Since it is a virtual event, St. George’s Night 2021 will be available worldwide so I can attend it online. You can follow the event live here on Space.com and on YouTube, and more information about the event can be found on Yuri Night’s website. The event will begin at 7:00 PM EDT (2300 GMT).
You can even organize your own virtual entertainment hour with Livestream and enjoy the event with your friends via Zoom.
St. George’s Night is a free event, but for those who want to get a little closer to the action, there are two options for a paid experience: “Backstage Pass”, which includes pre-show entertainment, video chats of celebrities and after party, and “VVIP package”, which additionally includes a “swag” drink delivered to your home and a private online party with private astronaut Richard Garriott. You can learn more about these options on Yuri Night’s website.
This year, Yuri Night will feature a number of special guest appearances, including: Bill Nye, Sir Richard Branson, Sian Proctor, Leland Melvin, Richard Garriott, Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency, NASA astronaut Cady Coleman, CEO Star Trek Producer Rod Roddenberry, National Geographic Explorer Wasfia Nazreen, everyday astronaut Tim Dodd, Tesla Pickup builder Simone Giertz, former SpaceX Design Director Hillary Coe, Kelvin Manning, Assistant Director of the Kennedy Space Center, Frank White, author of Review Effect and Virgin Galactic Flight Ticket holder Trevor Beattie.
