Anthony Martial’s running and speed rose to a new level in Sunday’s 6-2 win over Leeds, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer was asked about Martial at his press conference after last night’s victory at Everton.
Martial have sealed the 2-0 win in overtime and now have six goals in their last three games.
It’s kind of like getting back in shape after an awkward start to the season, and Solskjaer said he’s happy with Martial’s speed in breaking Leeds.
“I think (Martial) showed up against Leeds – he knows I’m in favor of him because of this – his current stats from that game set him a new standard, which I want to see more about,” Solskjaer said.
“Anthony has made several important contributions recently; assists, scored goals, he is more and more ready. It will always have quality.
“Anthony will get better and better. When we get Mason [Greenwood]Marcus [Rashford] and Anthony shooting all the cylinders, we’ll be a bigger threat to the teams. “
Martial’s season took a little while to start.
Like most United players, he was lagging behind in terms of pre-season fitness, as running into the Europa League semi-finals meant there wasn’t much time to rebuild before the new campaign.
He then missed three games due to a red card against Tottenham, depriving him of a chance to quickly build fitness.
That missing sharpness seemed to result in a lack of confidence, and his season reached its peak when he missed a sitter against Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.
Now he looks more ready and that can be seen in his contribution to the party.
Solskjaer feels that much more can come from him. If he runs as hard as he does against Leeds every week, the defense will find it hard to restrain him.
