Khaled Ahmed, recalled Shuvagata Hom, with the final 15-member team to be appointed later
Bangladesh will announce its main team for a series of two tests against Sri Lanka, which starts on April 21, after a team training match from April 17 to 18 in Katunaya. BCB head coach Minhayul Abedin said the 21-member preliminary squad will travel to Sri Lanka, when a larger team usually turns into a 15-member group shortly before the tour embarks on the host country.
“We decided to take the preliminary team to Sri Lanka because it would help our preparation and at the same time expose many players who are considering a longer version to go further. The lineup for the test series will be announced after our warm-up matches between the teams,” he said. Abedin.
Bangladesh will travel to Sri Lanka with three new faces to qualify for a test debut: uncovered bowlers Mukidul Islam and Shohidul Islam, along with Shoriful Islam, a fast-paced left-hander who recently debuted at the T20I in New Zealand.
Mukidul recently pulled 12 gates for Rangpur Division in an NCL game against title defender Khulna Division. He was impressive in two white ball tournaments at the start of the 2020-21 season. Like Shohidul, who has been a permanent performer for the past few years and has had an impressive run on the Bangabandhu T20 as well. He recently reached his first first-class age.
“They (Shoriful, Mukidul and Shohidul) were in our HP (high performance) setup and impressed in any version they played in,” Abedin said. “Mukidul and Shohidul were especially eye-catching in the domestic first-class class [matches] this season and future prospects for testing. Everyone has an age on their side and [they] are talented. “
The selectors also recalled two players with test experience after a significant lag: Khaled Ahmed, who recently recovered from a knee injury, and 34-year-old Shuvagata Hom, who last tested in 2016, against England. Since then, Hom has scored five first-class hundreds averaging 35.07 bats, while taking 104 goalkeepers averaging 31.29.
“Shuvagata is coming back after a while, but he was a consistent first-class cricket performer. We considered him a universal hitter, but his attacks are pretty handy and he gives us a chance in the spin department,” Abedin said.
From the team selected for the second test against the West Indies in February, Soumya Sarkar and Mustafizur Rahman were kicked out while Hasan Mahmud was injured. The BCB has given Shakib Al Hasan leave for playing in the IPL.
