Some believe it would be arrogant of us to believe and assume that we are the only planet in the entire universe that has life on it. Given how vast the universe is, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that there might be some other life forms out there yet to be discovered.
However, could scientists have found evidence of such a life? Astronomers at the Breakthrough Listen project recently discovered a mysterious radio signal that appears to be emitting from the direction of Proxime Centauri, which is closest to the sun star. Although the astronomers of the Breakthrough Listen project are not unfamiliar with the mysterious radio signals, they mostly attribute most of the time to interference created by humans or natural sources.
One of the reasons why this specific signal has generated so much interest is the fact that it is in the 980MHz band, a band in which it should not be transmitted by a human spacecraft. The second reason is because of the way its frequency changes, suggesting that it could come from the surface of an orbiting exoplanet.
Speaking to The Guardian, Westminster University astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell said, “The chances of this being an artificial signal to Proxime Centauri look staggering. We’ve been searching for extraterrestrial life and ideas for so long that it could show up on our doorstep, in the next star system, a pile of improbability on improbability. “
It should now be noted that this should not be taken as a final sign that there is life on other planets, but it is still intriguing.
