The leader of the Congress Council of all progressives in the north of the central region, Kassim Muhammad, called on Governor Yahay Bello of Kogi State to give up his alleged presidential ambition to allow the zoning of the party presidency into a geopolitical zone.
At a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Muhammad called on the national leadership of the APC to direct the chairman of the ruling party towards the north-central.
He said, “What the APC needs right now is a committed, energetic, dynamic and experienced party man who will lead the party’s affairs, and we are pleased that the Governor of Yobe State is doing the same.
“We therefore urge President Muhammad Buhari and all APC governors and other key party stakeholders to continue to support the APC under Mai Mala Buni in order to succeed in his task of repositioning the party for future elections.
“However, as the party prepares for a (national) convention that will introduce democratically elected national executive authorities, we, the North Central Council, urge our leader, President Muhammad Bukhari and APC governors, as well as key party stakeholders across the country to consider Northern and Central region for the position of national chairman of the party.
“The reasons for this concern stemmed from the fact that the Northwest, as currently constituted, has a sitting president who still has two years to complete his eight-year term.
“The Northeast currently occupies the position of Senate President, and the only geopolitical zone in the north on the left is the North-Central. And for the sake of fairness and equity, the national presidency of the party should be focused on the north-central. “
