The Governor of the State of Benue, dr. Samuel Ortom, yesterday, officially presented a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, for attempting to kill him by gunmen suspected of being shepherds.
THIS OPEN DAY, the IG also ordered the Deputy Inspector General of Police, in charge of the Bureau of Intelligence (FIB), Mr. Tijana Baba, to expedite the investigation.
The Force’s public relations officer (PRO), Mr. Frank Mba, the police commissioner, told SINDOSNJAK that Ortom met with IG at the force headquarters in Abuja and formally presented the petition to him.
“I can confirm to you that the governor of the state of Benue met with IG today (yesterday) and formally presented a petition about the reported attack on him.
“IG expeditiously ordered the DIG Force Intelligence Bureau to launch an investigation,” he said.
The meeting came days after an assassination attempt on the governor by suspected cattle breeders.
The group, the Fulani Nationalist Movement (FUNAM), claimed responsibility for the attack.
Ortom posted a photo of him with IG on his Twitter, @govSamuelOrtom, yesterday, after a meeting in Abuja.
Ortom titled the picture: “Earlier today with @PoliceNG IG Mohammed Adamu, after a meeting in Abuja.”
The suspected assassins attacked the governor while he was returning from his farm in the suburb of Makurdi.
Following the development of events, IG ordered an extensive investigation into the circumstances of the attack.
He also ordered the deployment of a team of specialized investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja in the state of Benue, to support the Benue State Police Command in the investigation of the attack.
Ortom also met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, and later told reporters he had no reason to fake the attack.
