Olivier Giroud had no idea about the goal for the bike in the victory of Atletico Madrid from Chelsea

Olivier Giroud says he has “no idea” whether he was offside because of his goal against Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea recorded a 1-0 victory over the leaders of La Liga in Bucharest in the first game of the eighth finals of the Champions League, and Giroud scored the most important away goal and the winner in an extremely tight game.

The Blues dominated, but the organized team Atletija frustrated them until Giroud scored a beautiful header in the 68th minute.

At first it looked like the goal would be annulled, until after three minutes it was given after replays showed that Atletico defender Mario Hermoso had deliberately played the ball towards Giroud, who was offside.

Giroud had been waiting a long time, but in the end his astonishing effort was made, not that he knew if he was reluctant or not.

Asked by BT Sport if he was sure a goal would be scored, he replied: “Not too confident, we were confident in our qualities in the game, but not too confident – don’t get me wrong. I didn’t know what to think about naked because I just wanted to focus on hitting the ball well.

“I love kicks over the head and I was glad to see the ball hit the back of the net. To be honest, I had no idea I was offside or not. Mase told me he didn’t touch the ball, so it came from a defender. That’s good for the team, good for me. “

Speaking about the win that gives Chelsea a real advantage in the return leg at Stamford Bridge on March 17, Giroud added: “We came here with a strong intention to win the game and play our game.

“We knew how we could give them offensive problems and I think we were very strong at the back together with the defensive form. I think we had better chances and well, tonight is a well-deserved victory.

“We know the importance of away goals in European cups and that is why I was very pleased to help the team win the game. We managed the game well, we were confident in ourselves, we faced a great team and I think we were very, very committed and we knew their main strength so we dealt with it. We just need to stay focused and finish the job at home. “
