OL Reign buys goalkeeper Karen Bardsley on loan from Manchester City

The goalkeeper pool has expanded for Farid Benstiti and OL Reign. Cosette Morché is no longer Reign’s only goalkeeper under contract after the club announced the acquisition of English goalkeeper Karen Bardsley on loan from Manchester City. Her loan will run until June 30, 2021.

Despite an international appearance for England, Bardsley does not need an international term. She is an American citizen, born in Santa Monica, California. She attended college in Cal State Fullerton from 2002-06.

“Karen is a player with a lot of experience. She has played in many important games and knows what it takes to win big matches, ”OL Reign head coach Farid Benstiti said in a statement from the team. “Our goalkeeper situation is complicated this year. We started with Cosette, a young goalkeeper with so much potential. And now we add Karen, who will be ready to play right away. ”

According to Benstiti, after Bardsley’s loan is completed, another top goalkeeper will join the club. Rumors have linked current Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi to Tacoma. The team is expected to sign the third goalkeeper.

“We have another signatory keeper to join the mid-season, and when Karen kicks off in June, we’ll have another top player to replace her,” Benstiti said. “It’s complicated, but very good. I am glad that there are so many very good goalkeepers with us this season – some younger, some more experienced – everyone will make a great contribution to our project. “

Bardsley has been at Manchester City since 2013 and has amassed over 100 appearances in all competitions. During her stay there, she won the league once in 2016 and the FA Cup three times.

“I’m really excited to join OL Reign during this period and I’m very grateful to Man City for giving me the opportunity to experience a new environment to get more time to play and progress in learning and development,” Bardsley said. . “I am very impressed with the whole approach and attitude of everyone at OL Reign and I can’t wait to meet the team and the coaches.

“[The] The NWSL is such a competitive league and I am determined to do everything I can to help the club start the season with a winning start. ”

Bardsley is a member of the English women’s national team, with 81 appearances for the Lionesses to date. She was part of three FIFA squads for the Women’s World Cup and two UEFA Euro rosters. Bardsley also competed for the UK at the 2012 London Olympics. After winning their group, the United Kingdom defeated Canada in the quarterfinals.

Bardsley recently took last place of Ellie Roebuck in Manchester City. Roebuck was recently invited to a camp in England, and Bardsley was excluded from the list.
