Save your games in the cloud

If you’re upgrading from the Xbox One, one important step needs to be taken before you turn it off and push it into your closet somewhere to forget. Those who don’t have the latest generation Xbox can move on to the next section.

One of the best things about Microsoft’s approach is the focus on backward compatibility. You can play almost any game from all previous generations of Xbox, but that doesn’t mean your storage data goes along with it.

All games you plan to continue playing should be stored in the cloud unless you want to start over. The good news is that this happens automatically while you’re connected to Xbox Live. Your save is synced every time you leave the game. You don’t even need an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

If for any reason your console is not connected to the internet, connect it again and run games just in case. From the home menu, you can also check (or delete) your cloud storage. Go to My games and applications, press menu key on the steering wheel, then select Manage games and extras. You can see all the save information by clicking on Saved data box.

Set up and update your console

If you haven’t set up the console before reading this, thank goodness for your patience. But now it’s time to open the box and plug everything in. Once connected, the console will need to be updated before you can use it. And that can take hours.

Before you plug it in, take a moment to figure out where the console will live. Sure, you can knock it to the ground and call it good, but that’s just looking for damage from dust, spills, or excessive pets.

Both the Xbox X and S Series can be placed horizontally or vertically, but they need little breath space. Microsoft recommends leaving at least 4-6 inches of free space on each side (including the top). You should also avoid placing other items on or near the console. Closed cabinets are also a big no-no.

The easiest way to set up your new Xbox is by using the Xbox app on Android and iOS.

It is also worth noting that you should use the 2-meter ultra-fast HDMI cable that came in the box. This cable is required to output 4K 120fps to XSX. Using an uncertified ultra-fast HDMI cable may result in poor video performance. The Xbox Series S is less demanding and uses a standard high-speed HDMI cable, which is easier to replace in a short time.

Once everything is connected, the easiest way to prepare the console is to use the Xbox app for Android or iOS. Follow the instructions in the app and on the new Xbox console and you’ll be done quickly. Or, more accurately, updating your console. Take that time to read the rest of this guide!

Adjust the TV and screen settings

The new Xbox consoles can provide amazing images, but only if your TV can handle them. Depending on the make and model, you may need to adjust the TV settings to accommodate higher resolutions, more frames per second, or even special features such as HDR. You may even need to plug the console into a specific HDMI port for best performance.

Fortunately, the Xbox lets you easily see what you’re working with. If you switch to TV and screen options in the settings and then select the details of the 4K TV, what is currently possible with your TV will be displayed. From there, you’ll have to dig through your Xbox and TV settings to achieve optimal visual performance.

And if you’re playing on a 10Hz 60Hz TV or monitor, it’s past time to consider upgrading.

Get some games

One of the disadvantages of getting a console close to the release date is that you can’t take advantage of any package that includes games you have to play. Of course, you can still play the best Xbox One games thanks to backward compatibility. You can download them right away, insert them into a disc, or even just plug in an external hard drive with games already installed.

To get the most out of next-generation hardware, you’ll need some next-generation games. It will be a while before the big first titles like Halo Infinite and Perfect Dark come out, but there are plenty of games optimized for XSX available today. See the best of them (and what’s coming soon) in the article below.

If you have no idea where to start at all, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate remains one of the best deals in games. For $ 15 a month (or less if you convert from an existing Xbox Live subscription), you get access to more than 100 triple A games from Microsoft Independent Studios, EA and more.

The selection is truly amazing, and covers the best of the Xbox One era and beyond. In addition, all future Microsoft titles are added on the first day. It’s one of the best deals in games, and the value is constantly growing as time goes on. If you don’t need a game library, you’ll still need Xbox Live Gold, which costs $ 9.99 a month on its own, to play online.

Install your favorite streaming apps

Microsoft has long wanted its consoles to be all in one place for all your entertainment needs. Now that streaming is the primary form of entertainment for many households, that dream can finally come true.

Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV, HBO Max, CBS All Access and many, many others are available for free. You can also find the most popular music applications, including Spotify, Pandora and others.

It’s also worth noting that while the Xbox Series S doesn’t support 4K gaming output, it does support streaming content. Rest assured that you can enjoy 4K HDR content in both variants of the new Xbox consoles!

Take another controller and other accessories

Couch co-op is one of the defining features of playing consoles, but if you want your friends and family to get involved in the action, you will need another controller. Here are a few options, starting with the standard Xbox Wireless controller, which costs about $ 60.

But if you can afford it, it’s worth spending the extra money for the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2. It’s the ultimate customizable controller that allows you to change the thumbs, triggers and rear blades to your liking. Leave the standard controller for your player two! In any case, get a play and charge kit to avoid paying for batteries in the future.

The new Xbox X Series comes with 1TB of built-in storage, but in the end you’ll have to invest in more. There are two main possibilities. The first is the official Seagate expansion card that adds a huge 1TB of storage space to match the speed of the built-in SSD. If it’s too expensive, an external hard drive will allow you to increase storage space more cheaply, but without amazing load times.
