Before Mortal Kombatsimultaneous showing in theaters and on HBO Max on April 23, 2021, Screen Rant talked to the cast and crew about the film and what they would like to see happen next. During our conversation with Max Huang and Crazy Lin, we asked them about their hopes for the future of the franchise. They both think there are a lot of directions Mortal Kombat they could go next, including a Spinoff monk from Shaolin for their characters.

Max Huang: I think the world and all the empires and the whole universe of Mortal Kombat is so big and constantly growing – that’s the beauty of it’s constantly evolving – I think I’d love to see a spinoff of a Shaolin monk. Speaking of the original story of Liu Kang and Kung Lao. That would be the ultimate dream, because I have so many ideas that I would love to put it there. And that would be my favorite.

Crazy Lynn: I’d think about it, because I think the end of the film leaves the perfect setting for that series. Liu Kang loses something that is really important to him, without missing a single spoiler. It’s a different world and a perfect opportunity to walk through some of those doors.

Spinoff Liu Kang and Kung Lao have a definite advantage in Mortal Kombat franchise, so that Huang and Lin can make their wish come true. The two fighters first appeared in 1993 Mortal Kombat II but Midway developed a spinoff for them a few years later. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks explored the stories of Liu Kang and Kung Lao in a non-canonical alternate reality between the events of the first two games. The game follows them as they travel to Outworld to stop Shang Tsung’s plans to conquer the Earth Empire, and other main characters such as Sonya Blade, Raiden, Johnny Cage and Goro appear in it.

Although Warner Bros. did not announce plans to continue Mortal Kombat franchise beyond this first film, separating Shaolin monks for Liu Kang and Kung Lao could be a great decision. It could be developed as a spinoff movie or HBO Max Original series. While Liu Kang and Kung Lao will appear in Mortal Kombat, it’s unclear how prominent their roles are as the story revolves around a quarrel between Scorpion and Sub-Zero and Cole Young’s new film character. If Mortal Kombat is a hit after the release, it may not be long before multiple spinoffs or sequels enter development.
