The Red Devils legend believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team is still vulnerable from behind and must add to become title challengers
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are a “problem” for each other at Manchester United, says Gary Neville, and the Red Devils legend reiterates his call to add defensive extras in the next transfer window.
Positive progress has been made at Old Trafford this season, with major silverware still being grabbed, but inconsistency remains a problem – especially at the rear.
Neville cannot see that the challenge for the Premier League title is borne by United’s current squad, with obvious flaws in an important unit that is still far from waterproof and lacks the right combination of individual qualities.
What was said?
“The key thing is that only one of the last 20 Premier League champions has conceded at least one goal per match,” Neville said. Sky Sports.
“It tells you about these three [David] de Gea, Lindelof and Maguire. To win the titles, that triangle of goalkeepers and two central defenders must be rock solid.
“He will not expel Maguire. They have invested £ 80 million, he is the cornerstone of the defense and the one around which he will build the defense. So they need to find a partner for him.
“It has to be someone of Eric Bailly’s physique and profile. Someone who is fast, good in the air, strong and can cover Maguire one on one. But also someone who will raise them on the field to allow them to play a little more.
“Lindelof’s problem is Maguire, and Maguire’s problem is Lindelof. I think if you put Lindelof next [Virgil] van Dijk from Liverpool, I think he is a really good player. He understands the game, reads the game, is a good defender.
“That he was with [Rio] Ferdinand or Van Dijk, I think he would be a great couple. The problem is that he is with someone who is not the most mobile in Harry Maguire.
“The problem that Lindelof has is that he has invested 80 million pounds in Maguire, so he will have to put someone with him. They both seem to retreat a bit and you need someone who can pick them up on the field. “
Who are Man Utd related to?
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to be aware that reinforcements in the midfield could have a big impact on Old Trafford.
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who is nearing the end of his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, is reportedly a short-term option that the Red Devils could consider.
Jules Kounde of Seville is another potential target currently trading in La Liga, and the highly rated 22-year-old has highlighted him as a shrewd addition to the present and future.
Ibrahima Konate has also noticed a move to Manchester, although RB Leipzig will be reluctant to part with the 21-year-old after already seeing Dayot Upamecano arrange a summer move to Bayern Munich.
