The Kano State Steering Board arrested 43 people for prostitution and illegal sale of alcoholic substances at the Kwanar Gafan vegetable market in the Garun Malam local government area.
Dr Harun Ibn-Syna, Commander-in-Chief of Hisba, who paraded the suspects in the Sharada district on Monday, confirmed the arrest.
“Out of 43, 34 are women, while the remaining nine are men, aged between 15 and 18.
“An investigation conducted against the suspects also revealed that eight people selling heavy drugs were found, while one person was caught with 80 cartons of different bottles of beer,” Nb Ibn-Syna was quoted as saying.
He said 14 of them were HIV positive, adding that 10 knew about their status, while four did not.
He noted that three scrolls of male and female condoms were also found on the market.
Ibn-Syna said the arrests were jointly coordinated by the Hisbah committee and the Nigerian Drug Enforcement Agency.
Earlier, the general director of the board, dr. Aliyu Kibiya revealed that most of the suspects are from Kano, while some are from neighboring states such as Adamawa, Anambra, Cross River, Bauchi, Benue, Kaduna, Niger, Gombe and Taraba.
