Jaume Munar took his first top 20 win of the year in style, dropping just three games on Thursday against second seed Fabio Fognini to advance to the quarterfinals at the AnyTech365 Andalucia Open.
Munar watched for an hour and 24 minutes at home at the Estadio Manolo Santana, where he reached the final here in Marbella on the ATP Challenger Tour last week. The Spaniard broke Fognini’s serve six times from 16 rest opportunities on the way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Player No. 95 on the FedEx ATP rankings arrived in Spain after a strong run in South America. From qualifying, he reached the quarterfinals at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, and he supported that with the doubles final at the Chile Dove Men + Care Open in Santiago (w / Delbonis).
In contrast, his opponent Fognini competed in his first match of the year on clay in Marbella ahead of his Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters title defense. It took a few games for Fognini to find his reach in the opening set, but by then he already had a double break and was 5-1 behind. The Italian failed to recover and won just one more game as Munar stormed through the second set.
Munar will take over Ilija Ivaška in the quarterfinals, after Belarus achieved anxiety over fifth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokin, 6-1, 6-3. Ivashka, no. 115 on the FedEx ATP rankings, he fired six aces and saved all nine break points he faced to take down the Spaniard and reach his first ATP Tour quarterfinal of the year.
Also in action, third seed Casper Ruud booked his quarterfinal spot after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gianluca Mager. He expects the winner of the sixth seed Feliciano Lopez and the #NextGenATP Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
