Gunmen attacked a military checkpoint in the local self-government of Okena in the state of Kogi on Wednesday and killed two members of the Nigerian navy.

It was gathered that the sailors were attacked around 7 pm, continuing their duty at the checkpoint in Okene.

The armed attackers, numbering about seven, came to the checkpoint and were said to have opened fire on the ship’s on-duty staff.

The source said that when they finished, they escaped from the checkpoint and rushed to avoid arrest.

Local Government Council Chairman Abdulmumin Muhammad confirmed the incident in a statement.

A statement issued by the office of the chairman’s special adviser said the ship’s staff numbered five and only came to duty when attacked.

“It has been confirmed that two police officers are dead and two were injured and are currently being treated at the hospital. One police officer escaped unharmed, “the statement said.

When they contacted us, Navy Public Relations Officer Aidi Simi said, “My command will get you soon; we are trying to take control of the situation. “
