Google adds Pac-Man, Hello Kitty, Gundam mechs and more to AR search

Google has added a host of popular Japanese characters to its AR feature in mobile search, which previously featured animals, historical artifacts and dinosaurs. The list of characters is taken from Japanese pop culture, including anime, TV and video games, with names like Pac-Man, Hello Kitty, mechs from Evangelion and Gundam and more. The feature works on Google search on Android and iOS app Google.

When you enter character names, you’ll see a “see in your space” option below the main search result, which will allow you to lower the 3D model into your camera’s view. Models can appear at different degrees of scale, with the option to display in full size, although I’m not sure how accurate the measurements are. I had the impression that Hello Kitty, for example, was five apples tall, but it leaned over my desk when I tried it.

The complete list of characters can be found here:

  • Ultraman
  • Ultraman Zero
  • Ultraman Belial
  • Gomorrah
  • Evangelion (EVA-01 type test)
  • Gundam (Odyssey Gundam, Xi Gundam, Penelope)
  • Cogimyun
  • Drums from Taiko no Tatsujin
  • Pac-Man
  • Pompompurin
  • Little Twin Stars

Google says Pac-Man is by far the most searched character on the list, with more than twice as many searches than for Hello Kitty in 2nd place. Obviously, the most popular country for Pac-Man is Peru.
