Eric Bailly should be part of the team

Manchester United legend Sammy McIlroy has insisted that Eric Bailly must start the team to bring his case to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Bailly returned to the starting eleven at Everton on Wednesday night and was solid as Manchester United booked their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park.

Ivory Coast have been battling injuries again this season, and against Everton it was only their fourth appearance at Manchester United in the current campaign.

McIlroy wants to see the center-back start a series of games in the starting eleven, so he can prove to Solskjaer that he can stay in constant form and perform at the highest level.

Former Red Devil he said at MUTV: “He needs running, he absolutely needs running in the team.

“I know [Victor] Lindelof i [Harry] Maguire is Ole’s first choice, but he needs a run and when he comes in, he shows the manager that I’m in shape, I’m ready and I’ll keep knocking on your door to play on this team.

“He needs that.”

Bailly has only played 89 times for Manchester United since arriving in 2016 due to injury, and McIlroy has admitted that entering and leaving the side has not helped the defender.

But he feels whenever he played central defender, he showed the qualities that made Manchester United sign him out of Villarreal in 2016.

“It can’t do anything good, but his problem is his injuries.

“When he plays and plays well, he shows you why we brought him here.

“He’s a class act, but he has to be consistent.”
