David Luiz: When the defender expelled Rafael from Man Utd

David Luiz is one of the unique footballers in history.

There is no doubt that the Brazilian also enjoyed a stellar career, winning numerous trophies at Benfica, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

He even helped Arsenal triumph in the FA Cup, and despite turning 34 on Thursday, Louise is still capable of world-class performances.

For his day, there aren’t many better center-right players in world football, both his reach and ability to dribble befits an attacking midfielder.

In addition to possessing the quality of a ball, Luiz is also a master of the dark arts.

It’s a trait that can often be frustrating for fans and opposing players, but it certainly benefits his team – as it did in 2013 during Louise’s first spell with Chelsea.

In the last minute of the 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Brazilian defender helped the exclusion of his compatriot Rafael da Silva.

While he was horizontally on the lawn after being kicked by an opponent, Luiz began to smile as he pretended to be injured, a picture that is still a meme today.

A really cult moment.

After the game, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson did not refrain from assessing the incident, calling Louise a “dying swan”.

“Rafael retaliates, but he, Louise, elbows him quite clearly twice, then rolls like a dying swan and convinces the judge of that,” the legendary Scottish manager told The Mirror.

“He smiled, it’s bad. What kind of professional is that?

“Rafael was elbowed and he retaliated. But it always happens – the player who retaliates always gets a bigger penalty, even though it was clear that Luiz had elbowed him twice.

Louise smiles

“Rafael was hasty. He’s a young guy and he should know better, but revenge never works. I wouldn’t say it was violent behavior. The judge didn’t even see it.

“I don’t think he could see it at all, but he left with the fact that Louise was rolling on the floor and I think that convinced him it was a red card.”

It really was the irritating genius of Louise, a moment that Premier League fans will remember for years to come.
