Chelsea press conference: Thomas Tuchel on the victory of Atletico Madrid and the miraculous goal of Olivier Giroud

Good evening and welcome to a live broadcast from Thomas Tuchel’s press conference after the match after Chelsea’s decisive match and a 1-0 victory in their first match against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The head coach made four changes to the team that started a draw with Southampton for the European clash in Bucharest with Callum Hudson-Odoi, Andreas Christensen, Jorginho and Olivier Giroud who all entered the starting eleven.

The first half went pretty much as most predicted it would be, Chelsea dominated the ball and Atletico defended solidly, so it’s no surprise that the break game was locked at 0-0.

Timo Werner approached the nearest Chelsea, forcing a close-up of Jan Plak Clouds, but within 35 seconds of the start, the Blues struck ahead of the rematch.

Mason Mount knocked down Joao Felix as he rushed out of midfield, and the Blues star received a yellow card for his problems, taking his third yellow card of the competition, meaning he will miss a rematch at Stamford Bridge next month

The second half was almost the same when the Blues completed almost three passes from their opponents.

But a moment of outstanding quality broke the deadlock and came from Olivier Giroud, who put Chelsea in the lead with an excellent bike kick. After an almost three-minute VAR offside check, the goal was finally scored after the ball was thought to have ripped off Atletico defender.

The Blues will also be without Jorginho in the rematch in London, as he too took a reservation in the second half of the competition, his third and will join Mount in the stands for the return leg.

The Blues held on to take a precious lead back to Stamford Bridge for next month’s rematch, while Tuchel continued his undefeated streak as head coach and picked up by far the highest score to date.

We’ll hear from Tuchel soon, and you can follow what he has to say via the live blog below. As always, full transcripts will be available online tonight.
