The president, Major General Muhammadu Bukhari (withdrawn), mourned the late Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Lema, on Thursday.
Bukhari’s message of condolence was contained in a statement by his senior special assistant for media and publicity, Garbe Shehu, entitled “Sheikh Lemu was a man of great knowledge, says President Bukhari.”
Shehu quoted Bukhari as describing the deceased as “an outstanding scholar, jurist, teacher and author who was endowed with knowledge of encyclopedic proportions.”
He further quoted Bukhari as saying that “with the death of Lema, Nigeria and indeed Africa lost one of its greatest scholars of all time.
“Lem was one of the moderating voices of Islam who used wisdom in spreading knowledge, thus presenting religion in the brightest light.
“The late Lemu’s contributions to religious education and the promotion of interfaith dialogue and understanding were immeasurable.”

The presidential aide said Bukhari praised Lemou’s incredible humility and modesty, adding that “the search for science and knowledge was his primary preoccupation, not the material things of this world.
“May Allah abundantly reward Lema for his contribution to Islam and the promotion of interfaith dialogue and understanding in our country during his dignified life on earth. May Almighty God forgive his tender soul and reward the noble needs of the ally. May God comfort his family in this difficult time. “
