Ben Askren could ‘mentally break’ Jake Paul and kick out the YouTube star when they meet on April 17, according to his former promoter.
Former UFC star Askren has accepted Paul’s challenge to fight at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta after the latter failed to name out Conor McGregor and Michael Bisping.
A former Olympic wrestler and multiple world champion in MMA, attack has never been Askren’s strong point as he relied on his grappling ability to nullify opponents.
Still, the former ONE Championship and Bellator welterweight champion faced career strikers like Douglas Lima and Robbie Lawler and survived.
Although Paul looked impressive in his two professional victories to start his boxing career, the standard of his opponents leaves much to be desired.
And ONE Championship chairman Chatri Sityodtong believes the gap in experience will prove insurmountable for the 24-year-old social media star.
“Obviously, Ben is a world champion wrestler and a mixed martial arts world champion,” he told Insider.
“In a real street fight, he would destroy Jake Paul. But this is a boxing match, which is Ben’s worst discipline. And Jake Paul has the power of a knockout – you can see that, you know, when you hit the pads.
“But it’s one thing to hit the pillows, and another to go to war. And if this fight goes to war, I see Jake Paul breaking down. “
“Paul doesn’t have the experience of a world champion like Ben has,” Sityodtong added.
“If this goes from heel to toe, I see that Ben won the fight by knockout, because Jake will only break mentally. He doesn’t know what it’s like to fight. “
Sityodtong concluded: “In Thailand we have a very famous saying:“ There are fighters who look phenomenal on pads, in sparring at the gym, but very few fighters look amazing in the ring. “
“In a real fight, a real fighting situation, I think Jake has no idea what it’s like to fight in the ring.”
