Unidentified gunmen killed a police officer at a church in Ughelli, Delta, on Sunday.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed developments to reporters Sunday in Warri.
“Yes, he (the police officer) followed his principal (unnamed) to the church,” PPRO said.
An eyewitness said that the armed attackers allegedly broke into the Pentecostal church located on Oviri-Ogor Road, Ughelli in the area of the local self-government of the Northern state of Ughelli, during the worship service on Sunday and shot the victim three times.
The deceased, a police inspector, was said to have served in PMF 31, Ogwashi-Uku and was escorted at the time of the incident.
“The service was abruptly stopped around 11.15am when the shootings rented air inside the church premises and the faithful fled for safety.
“It was only after the gunmen fled that some young men mustered the courage to come out just to discover the policeman in a pool of his blood,” the source said.
The source added that the policeman was confirmed dead at Ughelli Central Hospital, if he was urgently transferred to medical aid.
