Year in reviewYear in reviewWe look back at the highs, lows, surprises and prominences in and around video games this year.

Last year was one endless, dark night with one burning, glowing star: video games. I mean, can you imagine what 2020 would be like without video games? I, for one, can’t. Even better, it’s not that the annual calendar was a dry spell. From top to tail, hits were created – indeed, a saving grace. Without further ado, here are my top 10 games of the year, from best to least-best, but still awesome.

Had

Everyone knows the story behind it Had. Surprising announcement at the 2018 Games Games Award. year, with an early access release at the Epic Games Store that evening. Early access to Steam next year. A full version 1.0 on PC and Switch in September 2020, when it was eaten by anyone with a keyboard or Joy-Cons set. Game Game Awards awarded Had for top honors. Polygon,, IGN,, Destructoid,, USGamer, i Rock Paper Shotgun declared it the best game of the year. And now, the guy in Kotaku cites him as his personal number one. Yes, Had it was, without a doubt, the best game I played in 2020.

Had

Had is simply irresistible. He is like a thief, but not quite like all other thieves. In so many games of that nature, failure is failure. Oops. Next run. Hadhowever, it always gives you another bite to begin your Sisyphean efforts. The connections between the characters develop at a natural pace. The story – a handsome prince of the underworld wants to escape from the fathers of a repressive empire – progresses whether you win or lose. And yes, with each run you are constantly improving your powers, weapons and abilities. I cringe at the idea that games are “addictive” and generally think he’s on the gaming team to avoid such harsh language that lacks empathy. But I would be inaccurate if I suggested it Had it’s not a ridiculously convincing game, one that jumps into that “Just one more run!” way of thinking – no matter how late the hour.

Had

I have long been a follower of Supergiant Games, the indie programmer behind Had. I have a tattoo Transistor, another study effort. In my living room hangs a poster of the protagonist of that game, Red. Pyre ranks among my most played multiplayer games and Bastion is, in its brilliant brevity, one of those annual replay games. Needless to say, my hopes Had were heavenly high. In every way, the game soared past them. You can see the DNA of Supergiant’s opus in every pixel Had: hermetically sealed fight Bastion; incessant, branched narrative o Pyre; a quiet blow of hope that permeates Transistor; delicious art, smart writing, music,, oh god, music. For fans of Supergiant games, Had is a dream come true.

Raise your hand if you’ve been involved in Greek mythology since you were little, which may be the result of reading that children’s book that lived on every shelf in the 20th century. (You know: This one.) Many of the games in 2020 included Greek mythology – including the pleasant one Spiritfarer i questioningly named, and at the same time pleasant Immortal Fenyx Rising“But no one hit them with as much depth and humanity as they did.” Had. And it wasn’t just laser-focused on the Olympic gods that we’ve all heard about a million times. In Had, legends of mortals are also fairly shaken. This is a game in which you will learn the scope of the unambiguous connection between Achilles and Patroclus. You get a faithful epilogue in the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Asterius and that jerk with the infamous boat were treated with a plot that was not a canon two thousand years ago, but should certainly be taken as scripture today. With Had, Supergiant has imposed itself as a worthy manager of the Greek myth – the film universe that I didn’t even know I wanted a set of sequels for before September. Even better, Had he reworked the child’s sense of wonder and joy and boundless curiosity.

TBH, it would be embarrassing if I hit such a strong structure.

Had

Note: You do not need to be skilled at playing video games to write about them. If nothing else, I am an aggressive average player. (See: My tendency to keep approximately 1.0 ratio of homicides to deaths by shooter after shooter after shooter.) That said, I know for sure I’m good at Had“Not quite on the level of Vorime or Haelian or anyone else.” Olympic level fast runners, of course, but skilled enough to stick to my own. In one run, I even beat the final boss without losing a single goal. No 2020 game – not even the ones that declared me literal superheroes – made me feel as powerful as Had I did. During a year that constantly and persistently drove the opposite feeling home, week after week after week, that sensation was a gift.

Had

It’s no secret that there are a lot of great games today developed floorcrunchingconditions—Long hours and potential weekend work, either mandatory or implicit, in the name of hitting the release target. Hadhowever it was developed under seemingly opposite conditions. In Supergiant, emails sent on Friday after 5pm are hated. Employees must take at least 20 days off each year. But there is also apparent support for bonus projects, where if an employee is passionate about a function, they are given the space and time and resources to continue using it. In creation Had, Supergiant has given priority to employee welfare. Still, the game continued with a string of accolades and sold like hot cakes. If you ask me, it is a good example to the industry. Of course, such a model may not work for a multinational mega-developer, but some of these methods can be adapted to improve the conditions of workers in the industry known for combustion and traffic. An undeniable success Had sends a strong message to the industry.

Had

Had not listed a game of creativity, at least not in the way that, say, Media Molecule exclusively for the PlayStation Dreams is. This does not mean that the players could not test the limitations of their imagination, devising various materials on the go to complete the series with different parameters. Some players have even figured out how to win the game without pressing any button. (So much for my compliment “without losing HP!”) In September, the fastest players in the game aimed to win the entire game in less than eight minutes – a jaw-dropping feat that requires players. Now is the time to win in less than six minutes. The September races were built around a certain weapon and a certain set of blessings. Today, at the top of the scoreboard, you can see several different combinations. Had touched by a source of ingenuity that was so amusing to witness. Playing Had it was a total explosion, but the observation from the side was equally appealing.

Mandatory section “honorary awards”

Spider-Man: Miles Morales,, The last of us part 2, i Final Fantasy VII Remake each had enough of a spectacle worthy of the most honorable PS4 bar tents. Yakuza: Like a dragon i Paper Mario: Origami King are solid role-playing games that didn’t shy away pulling the heart strings. Ori and the will of wisdom i Ghostrunner while satisfying any hunger for the high-wire platform Astro’s Playroom served a wonderful lighter meal. Othercide i Gears Tactics offered a lot of control – through tactics – in a year she didn’t otherwise lack. Spiritfarer it may be the best idyllic control simulation featuring volatile talking animals ever published (certainly in 2020). Destiny 2: Above the light got me dark week, and reminded me of how damn solid I am FateIt’s gunfire. And, oh yes, Doom Eternal he was also a pretty solid shooter. Triumvirate of Ubisoft Card Games (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla,, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, i Watch Dogs Legion) all hit the sweet spot of the open world The spirit of Tsushima“Which brought out the surprise of double duty as.” cooperative killer game. In all mistakes, Cyberpunk 2077 it really represents a tour de force, despite one that, like the Acropolis of Athens, remains unfinished.

And then there it is Animal Transition: New Horizons. If you’ve adapted to our reporting on Nintendo’s life sim at all, you probably know that – and this is very cold – I didn’t really like the game. It’s true. For 40 hours more than that, I experienced more frustration than fun and I was mostly honest about it. However, Animal Crossing meant a lot to a lot of people in a horribly hellish time, and no confused writer on the Internet can take that away. If it turns out that 2021 is the same kind of constant Charlie horse that defined every minute of 2020, I hope Animal Crossing, or something similar, pops up. We should all be so lucky to fall in love with a resonant video game ten times.
