Facebook on Wednesday launched an experimental online forum called Hotline, an attempt by the social media giant to keep up with the live audio trend popularized by people like Clubhouse.

Constant social media is trying to prevent users from being networked by rivals with just the sound of a mom.

The Facebook app is basically a twist on Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything” and Clubhouse sessions, just sound sensations on social media launched a year ago that flourished during the pandemic.

The hotline offers users a combination of voice, text, and video options to participate in online discussions with hosts.

Users can ask questions in writing, which is not possible at the Clubhouse. Speakers, meanwhile, can choose who to invite “on stage” to speak.

“With Hotline, we hope to understand how interactive multimedia answering questions can help people learn from experts in areas such as professional skills, just as it helps those professionals build jobs,” a Facebook spokeswoman told AFP.

Session titles will have the ability to turn on their webcams to be seen, and can also remove offensive comments from text chats, Facebook said, confirming an earlier report on the TechCrunch website.

Facebook workers will moderate events on the hotline and evict anyone who violates the rules they set as acceptable, the TechCrunch report said.

A spokeswoman said Facebook had tested several other platforms.

They include a question and answer product called Venue and music collaboration apps called Collab and BARS that are more similar to TikTok. However, testing on an audio calling app called CatchUp ended last year.

Facebook has increased its video and audio capabilities live on both its main and sister Instagram pages following the success of the Zoom and Clubhouse video conferencing service.
