Some bad movies reach greatness because they are terribly awful. On our list are spotted such bad-they-good classics, like “Showgirls” and “The Room,” which is considered one of the greatest bad movies of all time. We also have movies that are highly targeted with all-star roles and award-winning stern lines that have collapsed and burned, like Nora Ephron’s crazy comedy “Mixed Nuts,” or ended landmarkly and invisibly, like Sean Penn’s drama about rescuing refugees “The Last Face. “
Major movie stars appear again and again on our list of valuable failures. Late career screenplays starring Nicolas Cage, John Travolta or Bruce Willis make the list multiple times. As well as movies with Keanu Reeves, who is known for his dead end delivery. He brings his signature wooden acting style in roles in several films on our list, including a serial killer in “The Watcher” and a clone scientist in “Replicas,” to name a few. Madonna also has the difference of appearing in more than one bad movie on our list.
At Stacker, we recognize that the genre captures the vibrations of film, and in this list we define dramas as films with a strong emotional center. Since we’ve put together the worst dramas, these films show a particular failure when it comes to conveying feelings. Many fail because they are not skilled in caring for the audience. Relying on more open interpretations of what makes up a drama is best practice for obtaining a database of films that represent all possible expressions of the dramatic genre. You’ll find crime thrillers, horror movies, cops and romantic comedies – each fails to create drama, but manages to be horrible. Each film on the list is considered according to film history and drama development.
Stacker collected data on IMDb and Metacritic from December 11, 2020 on all drama films with over 2,500 votes on IMDb. We ranked them according to Stacker’s rating, an equally weighted index between Metascore and IMDb’s user rating, # 1 worst. The connections were broken by Metascore, and further connections were broken by the IMDb user rating. If the film didn’t have Metascore, it wasn’t considered.
